Through the Looking Glass (Page 4)
One puzzle posed by the Shelby GT 500 engine was the odd carb linkage configuration. Instead of running along the left side of the carburetors as usual, it resided on the right. I found evidence of this and a photo showing that the linkage was installed upside down out of necessity. Shoehorning the big 428 with dual quads into the Mustang engine bay presented possible throttle actuation problems. Shelby’s solution was to rout the linkage on the right. Other searches revealed the PCV hose mount located under the air cleaner.
The earliest photographs of GMP’s Shelby raised another set of questions. George and I discussed the rear valance at some length. The prototype displayed that panel from a standard Mustang GT. I recalled that the Shelby’s exhaust cutout was circular rather than elongated. I suspected that the photo car had been restored using the less expensive, more readily available Mustang unit.
