Through the Looking Glass (Page 7)

The CJ Prototype Review-Modification Version 8, dated 8/7/06, that documents progress and changes still pending, really got my attention. They were talking about MY car. Forty-four specific items were addressed at this point, some mundane, others, critical. Here’s a sample of the dialogue:
23- Rear shock mounting pin should be painted satin black to hide mounting better.
24- Missing instrument pod under dash for non console cars. DELETE.
25- Missing shift pattern on shifter knob. Outstanding.
26- Missing matte black trunk gasket detail. Outstanding.
27- Missing windshield sun tint. Resolved.
28- Coil should be satin black. Incorrectly painted silver. Outstanding.
29- Missing hose detail from valve cover breather to air cleaner notch. Resolved.
30- Starter relay, only, should be satin black, not matte red oxide. Incorrectly painted. Wires stay red. Pending — changed to PMS # 186 red, not interior color.

A ‘spy’ photo of an early unit displays the refinement needed. Note the improper (and later deleted) headrests, work-in-progress grill, front fender emblems, solid C-stripes, black-painted rocker molding, too-low stance, droopy bumper, ’67 side cove gills, wheel opening trim, and lack of antenna.

At this point the hood stripe had not been applied. My first hand knowledge of looking out over that hood eventually trumped the younger guys at GMP who had only seen restored cars with a glossy stripe. We got low-gloss.
